Donating with PayPal - Frequently Asked Questions 1. So what is this PayPal Donations thing? ======================================= Ever since Delphi 1 was first introduced in 1995 I have written components and programs, which I have given away free, including source code - firstly on Compuserve, and more recently on my Delphi website. Many times I've been asked "Why don't you charge money for the components you produce?" My answer has always been "I use free software myself, so I like to give something back by producing it myself." But some people would like a way to contribute. They use software like XanaNews every day. They use my components to help them write tricky programs in Delphi. They want to show their appreciation, and help ensure that this source of free software continues. PayPal Donations is ideal for this. You can use it to send me money using your PayPal account, or Credit Card. 2. Why should I donate? ==================== You don't need to make a donation. You can continue downloading my free software without charge. But after a while you may come to think "I really like this program - let's make a donation to say thanks". Maybe one of my components helped you out in you job - remember the license they're released under has no restrictions on commercial software. That's when you should donate if you can! 3. How much should I donate? ========================= It's up to you. I suggest £10 when you download a component package or £20 when you download a major application - like XanaNews, or the PE Resource Explorer. But if a program or component proves particularly valuable, then please feel free to donate more! 4. How do I donate? ================ It's easy. Simply click on the 'Donate' button on my website. You will be transferred to PayPal's secure site. If you're already a PayPal member, type in the amount, and click the 'Send' button. If you're not a member, follow the instructions on the screen - giving your credit card details, etc. 5. I already donated! Do I have to donate again? ============================================== Well, of course you're welcome to if you like! If you download a new component set, or if you use XanaNews for a year or more, and regularly download the free upgrades, you might feel you want to make a further donation. 6. Where does the money go? ======================== It goes to me! Well most of it does. If you pay by Credit Card, Paypal take a small percentage. See their website at http://www.paypal.com for details. 7. What about Sales Tax ==================== At the moment my PayPal earnings aren't high enough to require me to register for VAT (the European sales tax). So I don't charge any VAT, or pay VAT to the government - and you can't claim VAT back for donations you've made to me if you are VAT registered yourself. If my PayPal earnings reach the £60,000 VAT threshold I will register for VAT then. I'll also be delighted!
